Wynton Kelly Trio & Sextet – Kelly Blue – Riverside RISA-1142-6 (2004)
SACD rip via PS3 to iso (2.28GB) | Jazz

A straightforward and easy listening 1959 session by the Miles Davis rhythm section of the time, Wynton Kelly/Paul Chambers/Jimmy Cobb, augmented with the horn players Nat Adderley, Benny Golson and Bobby Jaspar, who can stretch out on two of the eight tracks

Amazon:
Wynton Kelly was a relatively new member of the Miles Davis band when he made this 1959 session, but he had already formed a strong musical partnership with bassist Paul Chambers & drummer Jimmy Cobb. The trio would stay together long after their departure from the Davis band & a further tenure with Wes Montgomery. Kelly was an original stylist, who had a lyrical & economical approach & a way of insinuating the blues into everything he touched. You can feel it here in the moving “Willow Weep for Me” & the bright takes on “Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise” & “On Green Dolphin Street,” just getting established as standards in the jazz repertoire & getting distinctive treatments here. His light, flowing lines are well matched by Cobb’s spare accents & Chambers’s own melodic bass. Benny Golson on tenor, Bobby Jasper on flute, & Nat Adderley on cornet join in to make up a powerful sextet on the extended title tune & 2 takes of another Kelly original, “Keep It Moving.” It’s apparent how much Kelly’s comping could add to a soloist’s work.

I have always been an admirer of pianist Wynton Kelly, 1 of the musicians on Miles Davis’ KIND OF BLUE. I’ve heard him on many other recordings too. Yet I’ve never owned 1 of *his* albums as leader. Until recently. Perusing my voluminous ALL MUSIC GUIDE TO JAZZ 3rd EDITION (see my review) I did some reading about Kelly’s recordings & this was 1 of 2 that stuck out in my mind. I now own it & am enjoying it as I write this review. Interestingly, some of Kelly’s right hand work on the title track sounds similar to Thelonious Monk. The flute playing is a rare treat in a jazz combo, & that’s too bad because Bobby Jasper sounds great here!
“Softly As the Morning Sunrise” begins with a beautiful bass ostinato compliments of ubiquitous 50s/60s bassist Paul Chambers. The rest slowly join in & Kelly sets the tone with his appealingly bouncy accompaniment. Likewise, “On Green Dolphin Street” works well around Chambers’ 2-note vamp & walking bass line. Jimmy Cobb is solid -as always- in his restrained & graceful timekeeping. “Willow Weep For Me” & “Old Clothes” are also great tunes; very earthy, very relaxed. Not a dull note is struck here, everything fits together in swinging fashion. It’s funny how some albums & artists are so overshadowed by others; Kelly has crafted an album every bit as good as Sonny Clark’s COOL STRUTTIN’, yet I’m betting most people -even Jazz fans- are not familiar with KELLY BLUE. Well there’s no time like the present. Highly recommended.

SA-CD.net review by miguelito54:
Wynton Kelly was 1 of the most requested pianists of his generation among his fellow musicians. His comping was always supportive, his solos drenched with good spirits & blues roots without getting superficial. His recordings as a leader are not quite as stunning as one would expect from such an accomplished player. His 2 Riverside LPs were the 1st recordings as a leader after a long 7 years – his 1951 Blue Notes were only on singles & 10? LP at the time.
Honestly I would have preferred his other Riverside LP from 1958 with Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, & Philly Joe Jones as SACD: The groove is deeper, & especially Burrell’s soulfulness imspires Kelly a lot.
This 2nd Riverside album was recorded in 2 1959 sessions. The trio of Kelly, Paul Chambers, & Jimmy Cobb was Miles Davis’ rhythm section at the time, & some here kind of sounds like a warming up to a Kind Of Blue session. Only the sound is not as top notch as on the Davis album, & it differs on the bonus track which sounds more direct & has a different stereo spread: Did they add reverb & remix prior to LP mastering? Anyway, the trio doesn’t sound as inspired here as on its next sessions for VeeJay, which sound better (at least on the Mosaic box set).
The 2nd session here adds Bobby Jaspar (on flute), Benny Golson, & Nat Adderley on 2 extended tracks (& an alternate take as a bonus). Again the music is nice but far from the best moments of all involved. Long jam session type tracks.
Sound is of course more detailed than on the OJC CDs, but no real revelations here. Nice, but not indispensable.
